Dear Patients,

Dr. Irwin wishes to remind patients this Halloween that Trick-or-Treat festivities can still be fun, with these five kid and parent friendly tips!

1. Don’t Deprive, Encourage Moderation

Allow children to enjoy the Halloween experience. Instead of denying treats outright, teach children by setting limits on the amount of candy they consume. For example, allow children to pick a few pieces of candy to eat and store the rest for another day. This is also a good time teach children about nutrition and how candy itself isn’t bad, but rather excess sugar and sweets are.

2. Treat Time
Set a specific time of day for when children may eat their Halloween candy. This routine can easily become a habit that will last longer than their Halloween treats! It will also instill that candy shouldn’t be eaten throughout the day, rather enjoyed as a limited indulgence.

3. Brush, Brush, Brush!

Teach children that it is important to brush their teeth daily and preferably after treat time. Both brushing and flossing help remove harmful bacteria and lingering sugar particles that can lead to tooth decay.

4. Use Disclosing Tablets or Solution

This special solution is designed to temporarily stain plaque build up on teeth, enabling both you and your child to easily see areas that may need extra attention which brushing or flossing. You may also choose to continue disclosing on weekly basis, to help make sure your child remains cavity free.

5. Make Brushing Fun!

Brushing your teeth should be something children look forward. Make them feel included in the process by allowing them to pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste. This includes picking from toothbrushes that feature cartoon characters, or a variety of different flavored kid friendly toothpaste.
