Dear Patients,

March is Mouthguard Awareness Month in Australia. Our friends “Down Under” take this time to educate both parents and children, as well as adults who participate in high contact sports about the importance of wearing mouth guards.

According to the ADA (American Dental Association) athletes who do not wear mouthguards are up to 60 times more likely to suffer a significant mouth injury when not wearing a mouth guard. Mouthguards are highly effective in buffering impacts which can break teeth or cause lacerations to the gums and lips; and some studies suggest that mouthguards are effective in reducing and preventing concussions.

Dr. Irwin, Dianne, and Elizabeth would like to use this as an opportunity to remind our most active patients, that protecting your smile goes beyond proper dental hygiene and scheduling annual cleanings/exams. The best method of prevention against significant mouth injuries when playing high impact sports, is the use of a mouthguard. Our mission is to change lives and improve overall health through enhancing smiles, one patient at a time.

As always, Dr. Irwin and her supportive staff are here to answer any questions you may have; including helping you find out if your dental insurance policy covers mouthguards. To schedule an appointment, please call: 973-667-1567.

Best Wishes,
Brighter Smiles Dental – The Office of Dr. Sylvia Irwin
