Dear Patients,

Our mission at Brighter Smiles Dental is to promote overall well being with treatment that provides both a beautiful smile and great oral health. This includes maintaining proper oral hygiene habits, scheduling routine exams, and providing each patient with an individualized treatment plan that promotes a healthy bite and optimal function.

Developing a proper oral hygiene routine also involves ensuring proper care and maintenance is given to the toothbrush you are using. Recently the ADA (American Dental Association) published an article with recommended tips for patients. Some highlights include:

1. Do Not Share
Do not share your toothbrush with others. This can spread diseases, infections, and colds.

2. Rinse
Be sure to rinse your toothbrush thoroughly (with tap water) after use. This will help remove any left over toothpaste residue and food particles; which will in turn help inhibit bacterial growth.

3. Do Not Cover & Store
Be sure to store your toothbrush in an open air environment. Enclosed toothbrush holders actually encourage growth of bacteria because they contain moisture. It is also highly recommended that the toilet seat remain closed when not in use. This will help prevent fecal contamination.

4. Replace Often
The ADA recommends you replace your toothbrush every 3 – 4 months. This could be even sooner if you notice that the bristles are worn. It is also recommended that you replace your toothbrush after every cold or infection as to help mitigate reinfection.

5. Routinely Disinfect
Studies have shown that soaking your toothbrush in an antibacterial mouthwash can also help reduce bacteria growth.

As always, Dr. Irwin and her supportive staff are here to answer any questions you may have; including helping you find out what your dental insurance policy covers. To schedule an appointment, please call: 973-667-1567.

Best Wishes,
